On the inaugural day of our trekking adventure, we depart from Kathmandu and journey towards Besisahar, the gateway to our trekking expedition. As we traverse through the picturesque landscapes, we anticipate the thrilling trails and awe-inspiring vistas awaiting us in the days ahead. The rugged terrain and verdant forests beckon, promising an exhilarating exploration of nature's wonders. With each step, we immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the mountains, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and adventure
Embarking from Besisahar, adventurers have a multitude of avenues to reach the enchanting destination of Manang. Whether opting for the convenience of a 4WD jeep stationed in Besisahar or arranging a pickup through their lodge, travelers can tailor their journey to suit their preferences. Alternatively, those seeking an immersive experience can set out on foot, embarking on a challenging yet exhilarating trek spanning approximately 90 kilometers over five days of uphill terrain. Should trekkers choose the path less traveled, they'll find themselves amidst a rugged landscape characterized by off-road trails, punctuated by the melodious cascades of numerous waterfalls. Along this scenic route, encounters with fellow adventurers add to the camaraderie of the journey, fostering bonds amidst the breathtaking natural panorama. Traversing through charming villages such as Tal, travelers are treated to captivating vistas and warm hospitality, offering an opportunity to delve into the local way of life through homestay experiences. As the trek unfolds, the path meanders through a tapestry of communities, including Timang, Katra, Lower and Upper Pisang, Dharapani, Jagat, Chame (the bustling hub of Manang), and Barkha Village, each unveiling its own unique allure and cultural tapestry.
Nestled amidst majestic mountains and the Marsyandi River, Manang village captivates with its stunning scenery and warm hospitality. Upon arrival, the tranquil ambiance and unique cultural heritage of Manang envelop visitors, offering a refreshing escape from daily life. A brief 15-minute hike from Manang leads to the picturesque Gangapurna Lake, accessible via locally built suspension and wooden bridges. Formed by avalanches from the Gangapurna Himal, the lake's serene waters offer a mesmerizing sight. Continuing the journey towards Tilicho Base Camp, trekkers pass through Khangsar, a charming village situated approximately 2-3 hours from Manang. Despite the challenging terrain and daytime winds, travelers find solace in the sparse accommodations of Upper Shree Kharka and Shree Kharka. With limited lodging options between Khangsar and Upper Shree Kharka, hikers must consider their timing carefully. As daylight wanes, the descent along the landslide trail becomes treacherous, underscoring the importance of reaching Tilicho Base Camp safely and efficiently.
As dawn breaks, enjoy a quick garlic soup breakfast before setting off light for Tilicho Lake from the Base Camp. Early departure is key to maximize time at the lake. The journey takes about 3 hours, longer for beginners. Remember, there are no accommodations at Tilicho Lake, but a tea shop offers refreshments, albeit at a premium. The trail's most challenging stretch is the 22 Ghumti turns, but relief follows as the path becomes easier, leading you to the world's highest altitude lake at 4919m. Once you've soaked in the beauty of Tilicho Lake, it's time to descend to base camp. It's advised to start your descent before 4 PM to ensure a safe return. Staying longer poses risks of darkness and mountain winds, possibly leading to altitude sickness. Upon returning to the lodge, warm up with a comforting bowl of hot soup, with garlic soup being a highly recommended choice.
On Day 5, bid farewell to the Base Camp as you begin your descent towards Manang. It's recommended to start your journey after a hearty breakfast. Follow the familiar route back to Manang, which you've already traversed. Take a break at Shree Kharka to refuel with some food before continuing. Spend the night in the welcoming atmosphere of Manang Village, cherishing the time with your fellow trekkers.
Before bidding farewell to Manang village, take a final stroll around its charming streets. If you have some spare time in the morning, consider exploring Barkha Village, located just a short walk away from Manang. Alternatively, seek recommendations from the locals for other nearby areas worth exploring. Once you've wrapped up your explorations, prepare to journey back to Besisahar via the familiar bumpy road aboard the trusty 4WD jeep.
As you embark on the journey back from Besisahar to Kathmandu, anticipate a scenic drive spanning approximately 5 to 6 hours. Take advantage of this time to savor the picturesque landscapes and perhaps even make a few detours to explore nearby attractions along the route. Whether it's a quaint village, a hidden gem, or a breathtaking viewpoint, the choice is yours to make as you bid adieu to this memorable adventure. With cherished memories and new experiences tucked away in your heart, it's time to say goodbye to the captivating allure of the trekking trail, carrying with you the best moments shared with your fellow travelers.
